I finish all my guitar necks with gunstock oil regardless of the finish of the guitar itself. I like the look and the way the neck feels and plays. For my new model I want to try something new. I still want it to be different from the guitar and would like some ideas. What do you guys use? I had a Taylor before with a very nice, kind of an open grain finish on the neck...wonder what that is? ![]() |

Hi Peter. I've done an electric with nitro, a steel string with urethane, and I just recently french polished my second steelstring neck, but I haven't strung 'er up yet. I do like the feel though. I grain filled it with sawdust and shellac first. I thought I'd try the fp because a lot of folks around here seem to dig it. I think there was a poll a while back. Mike |

I know Robbie Obrien likes FP buffed out with wax. I'm not sure which wax he uses, though. |

I just use a little furniture paste wax and some steel wool to rub it out. Then I remove most of the wax with water. This type of rubbing out can be used on shellac as well as many other types of finishes. |

Robbie, thanks for the input. I wonder if anyone knows what Taylor uses on their necks? |

I have been trying out these two - Minwax wipe-on satin poly, and Flecto natural oil finish. Both leave a beautiful satin, slick feeling finish, I think the oil is easier to do, but not by much. |

I have two neck finishes I'll use: oil (think TruOil or similar) or FP shellac. That's pretty much it. |

I use shellac over zpoxy finishing resin. I like the look and feel of shellac and since any finish will eventually get worn through if the guitar is played a lot I like how easy it is to repair. Paul |

I do the same finish as Paul, Zpoxy with brushed on shellac, then after it cures in 10 days, I satin it out with 0000 steel wool and paste wax. Feels great, and easy to fix if it gets damaged. Very smooth neck, and very comfortable. Tracy |

Maybe someone could answer a question for me. Would a Tru-oil finish be easy to repair? I have read many times of memebers using Tru-oil for their necks and was wondering. Philip |

Philip[/QUOTE] Philip, Yes. Depends on the damage of course, but for normal wear an tear you just lightly sand down and apply some more thin coats. |

Nope - no pore filler on the neck at all, even with nitro - just wet sand the stuff in with 400/600 and a lot of the pores will fill anyway. I use about 8 coats in all, wet sanding 4 and 7. Then after letting cure for a few days, do the rub out with 0000 steel wool, then a couple coats wax. |

Thanks Tony, I think the Fletco its probably pretty close to True-Oil...I'll have to try that and waxing with furniture wax. |

I don't pore fill the neck, and I don't really try to fill them either. I don't mind the feel at all. |
